Does anyone have a suggestion for an easy to use 3d model creator?

I'd suggest Blender but the learning curve is steep. Go to best freeware downloads.com or cnet.com. Another is softpedia.com. I'd put them in links but the link thingy is greyed out. Here's some freebies I've downloaded:

Truespace---comes with a set of tutorials in a second installer package

Kerkythea-v1[1].3.04---this is a rendering engine

Yaf(a)ray r299.win32===another renering engine

HyCad by Jiang.Jiang

Apophysis2.08_3dhack

     There are probably more but these are the ones I have. Good luck. Sorry about the no links.

$6000! Holy crap! What possesed you to buy that?! Are you freaking insane!?

And as for the answer to the question Id use the XSI Mod Tool. It works great and it free!

There is no 'easy' way to produce original 3d models of any quality.

Blender is actually the least convoluted interface I've run across... although my favorite modeler is Rhino.

Maya is powerful but not an easy to use tool. It's not for beginners. Let him try his hands on free softwares and gain some expertise. After that he will decide.
